Best dog hiking backpacks and packs

A pack lets a fit adult dog carry its own water and snacks. Done right it's great enrichment. Done wrong it's a strain, so fit and load matter more than looks.

Quick pick: The Ruffwear Approach is the safe all-rounder. For multi-day trips, the Palisades. Start empty and add weight slowly.

How to choose

A healthy adult dog can carry up to about 10 to 15 percent of its body weight, and less to start. Skip packs for puppies and senior or joint-sensitive dogs. Load it evenly, check for rubbing, and build up mileage gradually. Vet check first if you're unsure.
