Dogs in Tonto National Forest

Can I bring my dog, and on which trails?
Dog-friendly

The Tonto spans 2.9 million acres of Arizona, from Sonoran Desert saguaro country up to the pine forests of the Mogollon Rim, and dogs are welcome throughout. The biggest concern here is heat, since desert trails and pavement can quickly become dangerous for paws.

Dogs can join you on desert and high-country trails, along the Mogollon Rim, and at the forest's lakes. Leash pets at developed sites and campgrounds, and keep them controlled on open trails.

Seasonal closures

In the low desert, avoid midday summer heat, carry plenty of water, and check ground temperature before hiking with a dog.

Leash rule

A 6-foot leash is required in developed recreation areas like campgrounds, picnic areas, and trailheads. On the general forest and most trails there is no leash law, but your dog must be under control at all times.

Service animals

Service animals are allowed where pets are not, under the ADA. A leash is still required.
