Leashed pets are allowed on parts of the trail, including developed areas and several beaches and coastal trails. The rules change depending on which park unit the trail passes through.

Dogs are allowed on the beaches and trails at Kaloko-Honokohau NHP and Pu'ukohola Heiau NHS, on the 1871 Trail and coastal trails at Pu'uhonua o Honaunau NHP, and in developed areas along the trail.

Where dogs are banned

Dogs are prohibited on all trails and undeveloped areas in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and are not allowed in the Royal Grounds, the Pu'uhonua areas, or inside the heiau.
