Rec areas that welcome dogs

Dog-friendly national recreation areas

National recreation areas are built for exactly that, recreation, and most of them treat a dog well. Lakes, rivers, and reservoirs with miles of shoreline trail, usually open to a leashed dog.

Every one below welcomes leashed dogs on at least some of its trails and shorelines, checked against its official page. They tend to be far more relaxed than the national parks.

Leash rules and swimming-area limits still apply, so glance at the page before you load the car.

Common questions

Can dogs go in the water at national recreation areas?

Usually yes, on a leash and away from the guarded swim beaches. Many of these areas are centered on a lake or river that a dog can wade into.
